minalism in venice

whilst on holiday in venice over summer i quickly noticed the little billboards on every street corner and each advert we saw was minimalist design and adverting, was really interesting seeing this everywhere; its looked modern however contrasting with the old architecture and broken billboards.

swiss design - minimalism

Swiss design and minimalism

I love Swiss graphic design. I love the simplicity, the typography and the rigour of the grids. And so I love Swiss Legacy, a blog devoted to the ever present legacy of Swiss design and all it represents. I also love swissmiss, the astonishingly incessant blog of Tina Roth Eisenberg, a ‘swiss designer gone NYC’ in which she publishes a ‘visual archive of things that make me look’.
One of things that made swissmiss look recently was a TED talk by John Maeda on Simplicity Patterns, in which he talks about paring down to basics, and how he creates clean, elegant art, websites and web tools, boiling it down to one simply delightful way to be.
Also found via swissmiss, Rainfall Daffinson has chosen 24 moments ofminimalism in web interface design from the last decade. On the same page, they’ve also put together a great list of minimalism resources and a fine selection of some of the best new minimalist websites (including a smattering of Britpackers).
In defining minimalism, Rainfall Daffinson included this perfect quote from Mujidesigner Tokujin Yoshioka.
Minimalism design relies on subtraction and the preservation of empty space.

minimalist illustrations

some great minimal illustrations by Paul Tebbott, a style ive seen a thousand times but still really effective and his unique, funny and clever ideas make them miles better than the others.

more clever minimalist advertising

Some more clever minimalist advertising, It’s not difficult to love minimalist ads, but to create one requires a brilliant idea. Most successful minimalist ads depend a lot on iconic brands, items, places and people.

A twist of lemon peel is set against a plain, pale background, with the fruit skin forming the distinctive shape of Coca-Cola’s classic letterform. So simple but yet genius dont think i could ever think of something like this..
Using the C that even with out the rest of the title you can instantly recognise as the typeface for cocacola.

This wonderful minimalist design reflects the power of Lego’s famous building blocks to fire the imagination, with an incredibly simple arrangement of cubes creating a submarine’s periscope emerging from the deep blue sea.

This ad for McDonald’s McCafe coffeehouse subsidiary features a coffee bean in the shape of a burger.

Clever minimalist add by hut weber showing what different a hat can make.

more lego image adds, probably my favourite out of these set of adds, showing how simple and powerful a childs imagination can be, they are kind of heartwarming, reminding you of your childhood and how 3 bricks can be a ship or a couple of bricks make a dinosaur, so clever and simple.

jamie xx & Gil Scott-Heron album artwork - minimalism

i saw this on my itunes the other day, its the album artwork for 'we're new here' by Jamie XX, probably the most minimalistic album artwork ive seen, just a pink rectangle on a green stock, at first i hated how simple this artwork was, i thought it was too easy however now i have realised how genius it is, its just a pink rectangle however now every time you see it you instantly recognise it as being Jamie XX its like he has accidentally created a logo or a symbol that you instantly relate to Jamie XX.
